Brake Line Replacement Instructions
Brake Line Replacement Instructions
1. Preparation - Park the vehicle on a flat surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.
- Use a jack to lift the vehicle and secure it with jack stands.
- Prepare tools including a wrench, line wrench, pliers, a drain container, and a torque wrench.
- Have new brake lines and the correct type of brake fluid ready (DOT 3/4/5.1 as specified by the vehicle manufacturer).
2. Drain Old Brake Fluid - Remove the brake fluid reservoir cap and use a syringe to extract most of the old fluid.
- Place the drain container under the brake caliper to catch the fluid during removal.
3. Remove the Old Brake Line - Loosen the fitting at the wheel hub and the brake caliper using a line wrench.
- Carefully remove the old brake line, taking care not to damage surrounding components.
4. Install the New Brake Line - Route the new brake line following the original path to avoid contact with tires or suspension parts.
- Attach the line to the caliper and hub fittings, then tighten to the manufacturer’s specified torque.
- Ensure the line is not twisted, stretched, or kinked.
5. Bleed the Brake System - Have an assistant slowly press and release the brake pedal several times.
- Open the bleeder valve to release air and old fluid until no bubbles appear.
- Keep the reservoir filled during bleeding to prevent air from entering the system.
- Bleed the brakes in the recommended sequence (usually right rear → left rear → right front → left front).
6. Inspection and Testing - Check all connections for leaks.
- Refill the brake fluid reservoir to the correct level.
- Test the brake pedal feel and perform a low‑speed test drive in a safe area.
- Ensure the brake warning light is off and braking performance is normal.
7. Important Notes - Brake fluid is corrosive; avoid contact with paint.
- If you are not experienced, professional installation is recommended for safety.
- After replacement, the brake system must be fully bled to ensure safe operation.
